Who is Anatoly Karpov?

Anatoly Karpov was born in 1951 in Zlatoust, Russia. He learned chess at the age of four and soon showed exceptional talent. He became a grandmaster at the age of 19 and qualified for the Candidates Tournament in 1973. He reached the final against Viktor Korchnoi, but the match was postponed due to the World Chess Championship crisis between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky. Fischer eventually forfeited his title, and Karpov became the new world champion by default in 1975.

Karpov defended his title against Korchnoi twice, in 1978 and 1981, winning both matches. He also dominated the chess scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s, winning many prestigious tournaments such as Linares, Tilburg, Bugojno, Montreal and Moscow. He was known for his positional mastery, endgame technique and psychological strength.

In 1984, he faced his biggest challenge: Garry Kasparov, a young prodigy who challenged him for the world title. The match lasted for five months and 48 games, but was controversially stopped by FIDE president Florencio Campomanes when Karpov had a narrow lead. The rematch in 1985 was won by Kasparov, ending Karpov's reign as world champion. Karpov lost two more matches against Kasparov in 1986 and 1987, but won the last one in 1990.

Karpov continued to play at a high level throughout the 1990s and 2000s, winning several tournaments and matches against top players such as Anand, Topalov, Shirov and Leko. He also became the FIDE world champion in 1993 after Kasparov split from FIDE and formed his own organization. He held this title until 1999 when he lost it to Alexander Khalifman.

Karpov retired from competitive chess in 2012, but still plays occasionally in exhibitions and rapid events. He is also involved in chess promotion, education and politics. He has received many awards and honors for his achievements, including the Order of Lenin, the Legion of Honor and the UNESCO Champion for Sport.
